Testing Linley: A Handwritten Font for Modern Web Design

I was working on a redesign for a boutique online store selling handmade children’s toys, and I needed a font that felt playful but still professional. That’s when I came across Linley, a handwritten font with a charm that immediately stood out.

Linley has a soft, cursive feel that reminds me of the way someone might write a note on a birthday card or a cake topper. The characters are rounded and slightly uneven, giving them a natural, hand-drawn appearance. It’s not too ornate, which is a big plus for readability, especially in digital formats.

As I tested it in the hero section of the website, I noticed how well it paired with a clean sans serif font for body copy. The contrast between the two made the headings pop without overwhelming the reader. I used Linley for the main headline, “Handmade Joy for Little Hands,” and it felt just right—playful yet trustworthy.

One thing I paid close attention to was how Linley performed on mobile screens. Since the site would be accessed from phones as much as desktops, I wanted to ensure the font didn’t become too small or hard to read. I found that at a minimum size of 24px, it remained legible even on smaller screens. For buttons and short phrases, like “Shop Now” or “Explore More,” I kept it simple and used bold variations where available to maintain visual hierarchy.

Linley also worked well in image overlays. When placed over a photo of a child playing with a toy, the font didn’t clash—it added warmth and personality to the scene. This made the landing page feel more inviting and aligned with the brand’s identity as a creative, family-friendly business.

I experimented with using Linley in different sections. In the blog header, it helped create a friendly tone that matched the content about parenting tips and creative play. On product pages, I used it sparingly for feature titles, ensuring it didn’t distract from the product images or key information.

For a more polished look, I paired Linley with a modern sans serif font like Montserrat for body text. This combination gave the site a balanced feel—creative enough to stand out but professional enough to build trust with customers.

When considering the use of any font, especially a display font like Linley, it’s important to check what styles are included. Linley offered several weights and alternates, which allowed me to adjust the tone depending on the context. I also made sure to confirm that it had good multilingual support and that it was licensed for commercial use, which was crucial for the client’s online store.

Another consideration was performance. While Linley is a premium font, I used the webfont version to ensure it loaded quickly. It’s always a good idea to optimize fonts for speed, especially if they’re being used on multiple pages or sections of a site.

I also thought about how Linley could be used beyond the homepage. For example, in email marketing campaigns, it could add a personal touch to subject lines or call-to-action buttons. On social media graphics, it could help reinforce the brand’s voice with consistent typography.

There were moments when I questioned whether Linley was the best choice for certain elements. For instance, I avoided using it in long paragraphs or for footers, where readability is key. Instead, I reserved it for decorative accents, headlines, and short phrases where its character-driven style could shine without causing confusion.

Overall, Linley proved to be a versatile option for this project. Its handwritten nature brought a sense of authenticity and creativity to the site, while its readability ensured that users could easily navigate the content. Whether you're designing a coaching website, a course sales page, or a portfolio, Linley can help bring your brand’s personality to life in a subtle yet effective way.

As a designer, I always look for fonts that can enhance the user experience without complicating it. Linley checks all the boxes—it’s expressive, readable, and adaptable. If you're looking for a script font that feels both fun and functional, give Linley a try. You might find it's just the right fit for your next project.
